Photoelectron spectroscopy of thin discontinuous metal films deposited onto a sapphire substrate

1995

Abstract The charging of small metallic clusters forming discontinuous gold and gallium films, condensed in vacuum onto an insulating substrate (sapphire), was experimentally studied by the method of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) for a photon energy of 5.4 eV. It seems that the charging is due to electron emission as well as to electron transfer from metal islands to the empty electron states in the metal-insulator interface.

Valence band photoemission from thin iron films - A comparison of experimental and theoretical results

1998

Abstract In this contribution, we report on photoemission data from thin iron films on W(110) that have been carried out by means of spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy as well as Magnetic Circular Dichroism in valence band photoemission at the storage ring BESSY. These techniques give complementary information on the electronic and magnetic properties, such as exchange and spin–orbit splitting. We compare our experimental data to new photoemission calculations, which have been obtained in the framework of a fully relativistic one-step theory for ferromagnetic materials.

First principles simulations of 2D Cu superlattices on the MgO(0 0 1) surface

2004

AbstractFirst principles slab simulations of copper 2D superlattices of different densities on the perfect MgO(001) surface are performed using the DFT method as implemented into the CRYSTAL98 computer code. In order to clarify the nature of interfacial bonding, we consider regular 1/4, 1/2 and 1 monolayer (ML) coverages and compare results of our calculations with various experimental and theoretical data. Our general conclusion is that the physical adhesion associated with a Cu polarization and charge redistribution gives the predominant contribution to the bonding of the regular Cu 2D layer on the MgO(001) surface.

Magnetic and Electronic Properties ofRENiBi (RE = Pr, Sm, Gd-Tm, Lu) Compounds

2008

Resistivity and magnetic measurements were used to examine the ternary rare earth compounds RENiBi (RE = Pr, Sm, Gd-Tm, Lu). These compounds order antiferromagnetically with TN below 16 K (RE = Pr, Sm, Gd-Tm) or are paramagnetic (LuNiBi). For some of these compounds a metal–insulator transition was found. The metal–insulator transition temperature depends strongly on the preparation conditions. Both the magnetic ground states and the resistance behavior are in good agreement with electronic band structure calculations.

Neutron diffraction studies of the molecular compound [Co 2(bta)]n (H4bta =1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid): In the quest of canted ferromagnetism

2013

The exchange mechanism and magnetic structure of the organic-inorganic layered molecule-based magnet [Co2(bta)]n (1) (H 4bta =1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid) have been investigated through variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements and supported with a series of neutron diffraction experiments. Cryomagnetic studies have shown an antiferromagnetic ordering at a transition temperature of 16 K that is followed by the appearance of a weak ferromagnetism below 11 K. The weak antiferromagnetic interlayer interaction plays an important role in this system in spite of the long interlayer separation. A ferromagnetic ordering is induced by applied magnetic fields greater than 1800…

Monte Carlo Study of Dense Monolayer and Bilayer Films on the (100) Plane of Face-Centered Cubic Crystals

1999

A Monte Carlo simulation method in the canonical and in the grand canonical ensembles is used to study the behavior and properties of dense monolayer and bilayer films formed on the (100) plane of model face-centered cubic crystals. Systems with different effects due to the periodicity of the gas−solid potential are considered, and the mechanism of melting in the first and the second adsorbed layer is discussed. It is demonstrated that the film structure is very sensitive to the gas−solid potential corrugation, as well as to the temperature and the surface coverage. In particular, it is shown that monolayer films formed on weakly corrugated surfaces exhibit the incommensurate (dense) phase …

Spin-polarization effects for electrons passing through thin iron and cobalt films

1993

Abstract Spin-dependent effects of the inelastic mean free path (IMFP) are evident for low-energy electrons passing through magnetized ferromagnetic films caused by a different attenuation within the layer. Values of IMFP for both spin components were determined for ultrathin iron and cobalt layers on W(1 1 0) by means of spin-resolving photoelectron spectroscopy.

Photoemission of electrons into electrolyte from cadmium oxide layers formed by anodic oxidation of undeformed and plastically deformed cadmium plates

1995

Studies of electron emission (external photoeffect) at the electrode/solution interface are an important part of contemporary photoelectrochemistry. The results of systematic studies of this phenomenon led to the formulation of fundamental relationships and to new methods for investigation of the physicochemical processes occurring at the electrode-electrolyte interface [1-4]. In particular, photoemission measurements enabled a number of parameters relating to the structure of the semiconductor/electrolyte interface to be determined. The photoemission current from semiconductors with many surface states to solutions with a sufficiently high electrolyte concentration is described by the well…

Memory effects in functionalized conducting polymer films: titanocene derivatized polypyrrole in contact with THF solutions

2003

Abstract Films with a polypyrrole matrix and pendant titanocene dichloride centers, p(Tc3Py), have been obtained by potentiostatic electropolymerization of the titanocene-pyrrolyl derivative, Tc3Py=Tc(CH 2 ) 3 NC 4 H 4 (Tc=Cl 2 TiCpCp′, Cp=C 5 H 5 , Cp′=C 5 H 4 ), in acetonitrile (AN) solutions on a Pt surface. The redox activity has been studied after the transfer of the film-coated electrode into the monomer-free solution of the same electrolyte, TBAPF 6 , in THF. Contrary to the case of AN or dichloromethane solutions, one can achieve a stable redox activity of the immobilized Tc centers in THF solutions during a series of cycles. A parallel between the redox properties of the Tc complex…

Thermoreversible gelation of kappa-carrageenan: relation between conformational transition and aggregation.

2003

Abstract We have studied, by optical rotation dispersion, light scattering and rheology, the κ-Carrageenan system to elucidate the processes involved in gel formation (on decreasing the temperature) and gel melting (on increasing the temperature). Our results show that, on decreasing the temperature, a conformational transition from coils to double helices first occurs, followed by aggregation of the double helices into domains and gel formation at appropriate polymer concentration. Structural details of this sequence are better revealed by re-heating the system. Melting appears as a two-step process characterized by first a conformational change of helices involved in junction zones betwee…
